“I’m here on a mission: self-love,” Myles Sanko says right away. “Self-love—and the rest will naturally fall into the right place. And through music, we connect.” This credo is clearly reflected in his songs, from “Unfolding” and “I Feel the Same” to “Stronger,” “Let Go,” and “Whatever You Are.” On Friday and Saturday, Myles Sanko and his high-spirited band deliver two fabulous STUDIO LIVE SESSIONS to a packed house each night. His voice seems made for this captivating blend of jazz, soul, pop, and hip-hop—deep and sonorous where needed, smooth and light in the higher registers. Pure emotion.
Even though the pieces are often ballad-like at their core, the driving force of the band’s sound usually pushes them into an irresistible groove: Jon Mapps’ rich bass tone forms the backbone, while George Chasmore on electric guitar and Tom O’Grady on keyboards shape the sonic landscape. Added to this are Gareth Lumbers’ insistent saxophone and, not least, the rhythmic powerhouse of drummer Ric Elsworth, who constantly shifts from off-beat to straight ahead, firing off a thousand original in-between beats that bring the whole affair to a boil. Myles Sanko gets the enthusiastic audience clapping and singing along and yes, a groovy, soulful party like this is exactly what we urgently need in times like these! - Arno Oehri
